U should introduce yourself and then tell him that u like him and see for his response.
Trust your friends but not make them your mailman, they might come with totally different result

Well at least you're off the hook now and you don't have to be the one to tell him. So it can be a good thing if he likes you too,if he doesn't, it might get a little awkard for you and your friend.
