You can safely wash your running shoes with a liquid shoe cleaner and a nail brush in the sink. If you do not have shoe cleaner, you can use a shampoo or dish soap. If they are really sweaty add some Lestoil to the wash water. It is fine to get running shoes wet, just make sure you air dry them. Remove the laces and the innersoles and wash them separately. If the shoes are too filthy to wash by hand, you can put them into the washing machine with your regular detergent and some oxyclean powder and lestoil. Use the gentle cycle, and warm water with the machine set on the delicate setting. They will come out of the washer fine if you put them inside two of those wash bags that are made for sweaters and other gentle wash items. Make sure that you allow them to air dry and do not put them in the dryer. You will loosen up the glue and the stitching in the heat and they will no longer stabilize your feet properly. They will dry more quickly if you put a clean hand towel in each shoe, or some paper towels. You can wash the laces in the machine in a sweater bag also.

Well, not the way I dry clean my coats, but just plain cloths detergent and about five minutes of soaking in hot water, followed by rinsing in warm water, then drying (in the shade) or the dryer if you have a shoe drying rack (do not use the hot setting). Make sure you take the strings out and do them separately.

Try Woolite to clean but I wouldn't keep running shoes more than 3 or 4 months if used frequently.
