I don't think it's a great movie, but it's a phenomenally clever one on every level, all right.
First of all, the plot - two dodgy but loveable crooks getting sweet revenge on a far more dodgy and way less loveable crook - might have been specifically designed to earn someone lots and lots of money, because even a Bresson-loving purist like me isn't immune to it.
Secondly, it brilliantly sells the rather unthreatening charm of the Redford/Newman double act, established in 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', bringing it forward into the 1920s and making a crucial crowd-pleasing twist on the formula of the earlier movie (warning: spoiler coming) - they don't die in the end, this time, although it looks like they do.
Thirdly, it helped to create and was in turn fed by the brief early-1970s craze for ragtime and all things Twenties.
It was on TV tonight, funnily enough. I didn't watch it. I must have seen it half a dozen times by now, and it's not even a film I'd count in my all time Top 20 movies. But for fun, it's hard to beat. Pity it's so easy to break down why it might work so well.

It's in the top 10, for sure. Newman and Redford, superb.
Personally I think Twelve Monkeys is one of the cleverest screenplays. He goes back in time and creates the future he came from! Brilliant.

I do. I love it and love to watch it over and over. And it was especially so coming as it did after BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID. If you know the ending of that film, the ending the THE STING is all the more clever.

Great movie. I think it was a better pair up of Redford and Newman than Butch and Sundance was.

At the time of its release, I'd have to agree. Since then, many movies have superseded that production.
