Well punk is one thing and hardcore punk is another, so if you are looking for some good hardcore punk band i can suggest some NYHC such as Agnostic Front, Biohazard, Warzone, cro-mags, Murphy's Law, Gorilla Biscuits(straight edge), Sick of it All, YOT(youth of today) Carnivore, Quicksand, Shelter, Judge, Madball, some newer ones..Full Blown Chaos, H2O, Sworn Enemy, Subzero,
Most Precious Blood, Step2Far, Kill you Idols, Subterfuge, Vision of Disorder, This is Hell, Silent Majority, Mind Over Matter
Scraps And Heart Attacks, Crime in Stereo
some old bands such as Discharge, The Germs, GBH, Bad Religion is not that hardcore but is quite entertaining, intelligent lyrics as well, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks (funny stuff) The Exploited, DRI, DKs (dead Kennedy's) first Napalm Death-Scum album, Terrorizer that's some brutal hardcore they came out with just one album but its really good stuff ..can go on for days here, dunno your style so you have plenty to choose from, different schools, old school, post punk, new school ..
personally like the first 9 bands on the first paragraph and everything on the second.. happy listening : )

Patti Smith, not to be confused with Patty Smyth. Patti's 1st album called "Horses" came out in the 70's. Also Nina Hagen, she is such a trip. I also like The Clash. Some people claim The Sex Pistols were so great, but not me.
