No. Not unless they provide them free to all students. College tuition and books are expensive enough already and a laptop isn't necessary in every class. If the curriculum requires it, then it should be mandatory for a specific class, but it shouldn't be a requirement for every student on campus.
BTW. I do think every student should have some sort of computer access be it a laptop, desktop, or campus lab, but at the same time, I do think it's ridiculous to require students purchase a laptop.

If they are going to be mandatory then the college should supply an amount that can be borrowed so that students that don't have the funds for a laptop can have the same advantages. I own a laptop, I have nothing against them being used at school.

I don't think that laptops should be mandatory, but at this juncture computers (even desktops) should be just as common as televisions.
Schools always have computer labs, so if one cannot afford a computer she can do her work in the lab.
BTW: For other answer givers--mandatory does not mean "illegal" as some of you seem to think. It means required.

Some schools think so and actually give every incoming freshman their own laptop. They are mostly wealthy, private schools that do this BUT if the wealthy private schools are doing it then it is probably a good idea. Therefore I say yes.

I think that they should be legal at college because most students live away from home and need to contact their parents. Plus, I think that e-mail's the best!
