My daughter is almost 8 months and has no interest in solid food. I know that all babies develope differently, and I'm not conserned. I'm just wondering if anyone elses babys were late bloomers in the food department. When did they finally get an interest in solid food?

My daughter won't open her mouth for it, and spits it out. She turns her head away. She doesn't watch me eat or try to eat my food. She just has none of the signs of being ready.

When I say solid foods, I mean pureed baby food. Solids just means anything other than milk.

My baby was totaly uninterested until about 11 months- she didn't get teeth until 10 months, which I think had alot to do with it. She just wasn't ready before that.

We totally skipped the spoon-feeding-pureed-baby-food thing, and went straight to table food. She's been happy to feed herself, which is really nice.

It's totally normal (if on the late side of normal), and solid food is just for practice for the first year, anyhow. Babies don't need it, nutritionally speaking- especially if they're breastfed.

Have you offered anything besides baby food? My younger daughter was not very interested in solids until she was close to a year, and she refused all baby food. Your daughter is old enough now that you could try offering her a couple bites off your plate or sharing a banana with her. You could also try putting some Cheerios, peas, or another finger food in front of her and see if she shows any interest in tasting it.

I wouldn't worry about it, but I would try offering other things. I used to joke that my younger daughter ate more carpet fuzz off the floor than she did food at the table. :-P She's now 22 months old and is a pretty good eater (although she still prefers to graze throughout the day rather than eating big meals/snacks).

It's nice to see that you're not too worried. She'll probably eat more when she's ready.

I think it's great that you are waiting for her to show an interest. Years ago, the pediatricians used to give us charts and timetables, based on the birth weight of the baby. We were told when to start each solid food, etc.

My first baby was over 8 lbs, so he was supposed to start eating rice cereal at about 3 weeks!! He was not at all interested, or ready for that. Food was pretty much a battle ground with him throughout his childhood. He was a "picky eater." I've often thought our inexperience and the regimented feeding schedule had laid the groundwork for that problem.

The rest of our children were not given solid food until they showed signs of being ready... because we didn't want to go through all that again. They never had such feeding problems.

My oldest daughter was not on solids with a real interest untill she was 15 months old. I was concerned. But she was of healthy weight and the doctor said she was fine. She will eat when shes ready.
Try offering her small, cut up or mashed adult foods with out stuff in it (no salt, peper, butter babys don't need it). I found all 3 of my children prefered this to jar foods. My middle also would only eat toddler bite size stuff, never from a spoon.

Just as you said, all babies develope differently. If she is a healthy weight and content, then just be patient. Don't force her to eat, it will only discourage her more. Try different foods. If she doesn't eat it wait a few days and try something else.

If you are too concerned, talk to your doctor. But as long as her wieght is good and she is happy, I would let her be. She'll eat when she is ready. Something else too. . .is she teething. Her gums could be sore. Try teething cookies. Or give her cheerios.

But don't worry, be patient. Only your doctor can know if there are serious health problem.

Good Luck!!!

You are concerned that your Baby at 8 mos. old does not want to eat solid foods? some Mothers try to make their children eat solid foods but, I think that at her age you should try to start her with strained foods for Babies,Gerber, or any one of your choice, she is too small to be eating solid foods. I have always started my kids with,a soft boiled egg for breakfast with some orange juice, at dinner time I would give them a jar of strained noodles, and try to make them eat some of the fruits or puddings. at supper time you can give them half of the baby food of your choice. And always remember to add the formula after every meal. And Mom don't worry before you know it she will top you with her own appetite
