Slaves weren't able to own property because they weren't viewed as being real people. In fact, they were only considered 3/5 of a person. When a census was taken, five slaves counted as three people.

Because they were property. Property can not own property. Everything a slave possessed could be taken away by his master. Everything a slave possessed was actually the property of his master.

At the time, slaves had no rights, no right to own property much less to the self respect they deserved. No voting rights, nothing. What a dark period in America. No pun intended.

because they were 'property' and they could NOT own any unless they were free from slavery' but that could only happen if their owner released them or if they got married to someone who was free and their spouse could buy their freedom.
