Have audience members to name a painting they like and then to describe it in words. Most likely they will describe what they see rather than what they feel. Ask the same person again, to describe what emotions are stirred when looking at the same artwork. Then ask the same person what he/she thinks the artist was trying to express, not to us but to him/herself. Is art important? Ask the audience to imagine and describe what their life might be like without artwork. No images. Just words. Can a picture be worth a thousand words?

Perhaps you could ask the audience to think of an artwork off the top of their heads and then take a show of hands on what it may have been ie, The Mona Lisa. If a lot of people thought of the same thing that is interesting in one way and talk about that, if there was no consensus that is interesting in another way, art is a different thing for everyone etc. Be prepared to talk about either result.
