Athlete's foot is caused by a fungus and is easily treated with the over the counter Athlete's feet remedies sold at any drug or grocery store. Ask the pharmacist if you are not sure what to get. At the same time, get some of the anti-fungal in a powder form. You will need to treat all the shoes you've been wearing to make sure there isn't any of the fungus still living in the lining. Until it goes away, you should try to keep your feet dry and out in the air and light whenever possible- going barefoot if you don't need to wear shoes.
The way to prevent Athlete's feet is through a good cleaning of the shower/bath floor and area. In public showers and locker rooms this can't be done often enough and that's why it's usually associated with those places. In a public locker room the best policy is to not go barefoot at all, anywhere. Get a pair of cheap shower shoes- flip flops, and wear those where you'd normally go barefoot. After you shower, be sure to get your feet good and dry, using a medicated foot powder afterwards. Fungus likes moist, dark, warm places best to grow, and the conditions between your toes are the most inviting for that reason. So keep them clean and dry, and let some light get to the little piggies. At home, since you've gotten the fungus, you need to do a really good clean of your bathroom and shower/tub, using any good bathroom cleaner that says it kills germs. I personally like to use the Chlorox products, as bleach kills just about everything, but anything that kills germs will work fine. Throw the bathroom rug in the wash, along with your socks, in the hottest water and detergeant they can take. You want to try to kill any stray fungus you may have left behind.
The athlete's foot medications usually start to help fairly quickly, but it may be a few days to get rid of it completely. The best way to control it, obviously, is to try to avoid getting it in the first place, and to practice good bathroom sanitation at home.

In public places wear flippers. Then use anti-fungal treatment for the full time recommended on the label. Now if the foot has been close to your crotch the shoes won't help. But using a hair dryer down there and some powdered anti-fungal then nothing will rot off :| ;)

Athlete's foot is caused by fungus. You need an antifungal remedy from the drugstore. Use it until it goes away. Control it by not getting reinfected, ie., not showering in public places where there could be fungus around.

I just read about Peroxide a few days ago. I think it has been around for so long that people have forgotten about it. You can soak your footsies in it, and even clean your floors with it, not to mentions laundry. I hold it in my mouth for a few minutes before I brush to whiten my teeth, and keep my breath fresh.
