runners advantages- most hitters are righties-meaning the catcher has to shift a little and possibly throw over the hitter's head sideways, catching the pitcher and catcher by surprise since it's rarely attempted and there are far fewer second base pickoff attempts.Catcher's advantages-there's only one I can think of-there's a shorter throw- 90 feet from home to third vs. 127 feet from home to second.

In a sense, you are correct. It is a shorter distance for a runner since they can get a bigger lead (because it's harder to pick someone off at second). And yes, it is more advantageous to be at third than at second.

But, there are so many reasons not to steal third. First of all, if you're fast (which presumably you are if you're stealing a base... especially third), you'll most likely score on a single from second base anyways. A second thing is that you wouldn't do it with two outs because you're already in scoring position, and you would be out of the inning if you did that. With no outs, it could completely stop a rally from developing if you get out. Another reason is that it's a shorter distance from home to third than from home to second as you already mentioned.

So there you have it.

P.S. The batter can't be in the way of the catcher when he throws the ball. That's an out.

1. Because the runner at 2nd is in scoring position already.

2. The throw is very close for the catcher as compared to throwing all the way down to 2nd.

3. Many times a runner is stealing 2nd to eliminate a double play possibility or take away a force play at 2b. There is no comparable advantage in this example for stealing 3rd.

4. Since a runner stealing 3rd would be leaving from 2nd, the catcher will see him attempting to steal instantly as opposed to leaving from 1st which the catcher may not pick up right away

Closer throw for the catcher and the runner has to get a great jump off second.

A lot of managers dont want to take a risk of getting a played taken out of scoring position. Especially if there fast players they already have the chance to score on a single so why risk getting them thrown out?

I guess the assumption is once the guy gets to second, a deep single can score him
