Women attending the wedding are quite dressed up. You are expected to wear a fancy hat like those that the queen wears. You can rent hats over there, similar to our tuxedo rentals. Warning though, I think they're $100+ per day.

It depends where the ceremony is held;
No clothes in a nudist camp.
Diving gear under water.
Mountaineering gear on top of a mountain.
At a really smart do ladies dress up including hats, but that does not happen at most weddings.
Basically, anything goes as long as it suits the venue.
Best wedding I ever saw at the Town Hall I worked in the bride wore a spectacular scarlet lace ball gown and her bridesmaids were in black.

People in the UK usually wear hats to weddings (women) and they would wear a dress or smart suit depending on the time of day. A smart trouser suit is acceptable too. Normally black is not worn at weddings.

It really depends on the Wedding, some people go for formal weddings in requiring formal dress. Others tone it right down. The UK is also a multi-cultural country so it would depend also on the traditions, culture and expectations of the people who invite you.

If you are a guest, your best outfit and a hat(women) a smart suit and tie (men). Don't do what my very ex friend did and turn up in a mini dress, no tights and flip flops! Disrespectful to the bride and groom. If you're not into dressing up you just have to bite the bullet and go with it I'm afraid.

Smart pants and a nice shirt, some shoes and poss a watch and belt to accessorise.
Take a look at some websites, next, topman or wherever you normally shop for clothes.

Nothing white. Avoid the colours of the wedding chosen. So if the bridesmaids are wearing a peach, dont go for peach.
