I want to make a small simple homecoming mum, but I don't know how.

It is actually very easy. Buy the supplies at a craft store or a wholesale florist. Have a good glue gun and lots of glue sticks. Cut your ribbons to the length wanted and glue them to the mum back first. Use different widths of ribbon to vary the look. Attach any trinkets to ribbon before gluing. Glue the mum on top of the ribbon. Be sure to use lots of glue and hold the mum down until it sets. If you use hot glue be careful. It is a lot of fun and easy once yoiu start doing it. Good luck.

from paper:
cut six four inch squares of tissue (wrapping tissue)
stack them on top of each other
fold them into a fan (the basic accordian pleat) from one end to the other
secure the center with a twist tioe, a hair pin or just a piece of string
carefully pull the top layer of paper from one side toward the middle, then ppull the top layer from the other side toward the middle
repeat for all the layers.
when you are done hold the flower at the center and smack the edge of the table a few times where the open seams are, this sort of causes the seams to disappear.
this is a paper mum

You can make them bigger or smaller or even cut a green square and put it on the bottom of the stack and pull the green down and to one side to make "leaves"
hope this helps
