Think of your voice as a 'wind instrument' and the vocal chords 'the reed'. In order to produce the sound you want you need to be breathing in/out efficiently to begin with. Try breathing exercises before singing to expand the capacity of your lungs..and also strengthen you diaphragm. People tend to sing from their throat which stains the vocal chords. When breathing out, place your hand over your stomach and feel yourself pushing air out from the middle. Drink gallons of water, your vocal chords need constant lubricating. Check the pitch of your own voice via piano/keyboard.Eg play a note and sing it's pitch. (use or buy a set of pitch pipes if no piano etc.) You can buy vocal trainer Cd's with exercises and scale for much less than a coach, they may help. Sing with other people who love to sing if you can..that's good for the heart and will encourage your confidence. Be yourself when you sing...some of the best vocalist have been so because of their uniqueness.

It's either go to a singing teacher, join a choir or local choral society or just carry on with the hairbrush

I have heard that you need to sing confidently and loudly, if you doubt yourself you sing quietly and this gives your pitch more opportunity to waver. But you will already know this if you've sung in the past - no harm in a reminder. Good luck with it.

Go out to karaoke and ask others what they think of your voice. Practice practice practice. If you're not willing to pay for a coach you have to hope you're doing it right, not wrong, and if wrong you're probably hurting not helping your voice.
