How are student short films? Do they usually suck? Can a good short film get me into the business? Can I just go and make a movie with a digital camera and mic? How's your career going? Please...I can't talk to anyone serious about film around my school. It seems people are doing it just to have fun instead of their passion.

No they do not usually suck...but that depends on you. No a good short film cannot get you "into the business", it takes years of work experience. No you can't make a film with just a camera and a mic...that is if you want to be taken seriously. It seems that if you want to be a filmmaker then you should be attending a school that takes it seriously ant you have to earn being in the program. Those who 'just want to have fun' sound like advertising students.

Okay here we go.
Yes
Student films can be excellent (production values not withstanding)
But,yes,9 out of 10 suck
If it`s cleverly done, then yes,a short film can be an excellent way to get a foot in the door, though remember there are many, many others out there with the same goal.
Remember, you can equally use a short if you want to do something other than directing.
Check out Vin Diesel for proof of this.
Can you just go out with your digi cam and mic? Yes,but if you`ve got sod all money to play around with I`d advise you to concentrate on your script.Work it and revisit it till it`s as lean and mean as possible. No point making a short that`s got filler in it.
And above all, keep it simple.Don`t try and make your opus work with your first film.
It takes time and hard work to get where you want to be,so have patience.
Check with local colleges too, they may run night or summer schools where you can pick up the basics.

How`s my career going? Just fine,thank you.As long as I`m writing,I`m happy.

Good luck with your film making,

crowman
