If you don't have a camera, you can make sketches of something that interests you and then create your own interpretation of that object. Maybe something about the angle or the details are important to capture - so you start drawing and then see if it turns into a bigger work of art.
I used to use a sketchbook to do cartoons, too.

To keep original Ideas fresh for future use or comments on related events relating to ones works. To work out problems with a casting Idea in Painting, sculpture or other media works.

Artists use sketch books to sketch or draw thier artwork in. Some people use them as diaries or journals.
