Most people hate Americans.
Why? In most cases they are like drunk gate crashers at a party. Nobody invited them in, yet they come in and act as if they owned the place.
The only thing louder than an American on holiday is the clothes they are wearing. They don't know the meaning of the word etiquette and spelling it would give most of them a severe migraine.
The Bush administration has caused more problems for World stability than at any other time in history and yet he was voted back for a second term in office. He's the man leading the most powerful nation on the planet and he can't even string a coherent sentence together without an aide prompting him.
The word humility does not exist in the dictionary for Americans and they get annoyed when other nations say stop meddling in things that are not your concern.
Having said that, Americans as individuals are different. I have family in the States. As individuals they are, by and large, great people. It's just the image Americans project when they come to Europe or go South America or Asia that causes eyes to be raised by those unfortunate enough to have to deal with them.

The problem with stereotypes is that they have to come from somewhere. As they say, there is no smoke without fire. If the majority of Americans are not arrogant, ignorant, obese, demanding morons with less dress sense than a chimpanzee in a fancy dress shop, why do non Americans immediately attach these labels to Americans?

The only thing that ANYONE can say about "Americans" that is true is that they are American. And they are people. That's it. Not that they are rude, or ugly, or fat, or close-minded, or anything. Because unless you have met every single American, then it's not true. You could meet all but one American and have every single one you met say they love George Bush, but if that last one American doesn't, you still can not say "All Americans love George Bush."
As an American myself, I am VERY sick and tired of the way people stereotype all Americans. We are all not one person, and we certainly DON'T all have the same things in common.
Sure, the MAJORITY of Americans all may have a certain thing in common, but NOT every single person who lives in America thinks that way! This is a very diverse country with a lot of different opinions.
Now, I'm not pointing my anger towards the person asking the question, but to everyone who has replied saying generalizations about Americans. It's not fair, and it's disrespectful to the Americans who don't deserve it.

I think the film 'The Dirty Dozen' best sums up Americans. For those few who have never seen this film, briefly:

Twelve Americans convicted of capital crimes volunteer for a dangerous WW2 mission. They attack a castle deep in Germany where German officers relax on leave. The convicts force the officers, wives and children into a cellar, pour petrol down the ventilation shaft and burn all them all alive.

For some extraordinary reason, viewers are supposed think that the Americans are the good guys. They cannot see what is in front of their faces.

The U.S.A. government are acting like the stereotypical "Americans" that most of the people answering this question are refering to. The English have a reputation abroad for being hard drinking thugs however this is a small minority not all of us. Let us hope that the Bush administration is also in the minority for god help us if the current mayhem and madness continues.

Like any society there is good and bad. They are much more exteme than the British. I have met some awful american tourists but some fantastic americans on my trip to NY. I think they are pretty insular as a society and very hypocritical but that's more of an opintion about their government than the people.

What people think of Americans generally depends on who they've met and their experiences with them. Some who havent met or interacted with an American will be more likely to be influenced by whatever they hear...much like Americans about other countries.

I think most of the world feels that is is not particularly the American people, but just like the Nazis it was the leader Hitler, in the u.s.a. case it is Bush, but he is a puppet, it is the C.I.A. who run it, and the Mafia. i lived there, I am not American. i like some thing about it, but choose never to go again. They are a very ignorant race, and need therapy all the time, and try to get in films, and sell their whole mode of crap to the world. I do not much care, but rather feel sorry for them, they are plastic.

Met some really nice one's when I was travelling, but you cannot generalise about 300 million people because of the actions of their administration. You should check out illumanati conspiracy to get a few different takes on what is happening in the world at present and just think it through. I was a soldier and my heart goes out to all service men and women in 'harms way' at the present time and the worry and the grief of their families - they are just doing their duty, if you want to get angry, get angry with those in power who cause war but not a whole nation

As individuals a nicer lot of people you would ever wish to meet As a nation well, Might is right seems to be there way.

As far as their military is concerned god they frighten the life out of me. The collective military brain is in my opinion the most dangerous threat to world peace ever. They will fight for so called freedom until the last one of there allies drops (usually through friendly fire, I cant quite get the head round that saying whats friendly about killing your own side, incompetent, stupid, gun-hoe, yes friendly no.
God bless America is the motto God help the rest of us is the reality.
