I have also checked for a bad ground. Keep in mind my car only has 45000miles and it's a standard 5 speed. Unfortunately my warranty has expired. Three year warranty came first and not 65000miles. At least the dealership explains.(PLEASE HELP) and THANK YOU.

I think the back-up lights activate when you physically move the gear shift lever into the reverse-gate, which presses up against a spring-loaded push switch. The switch box has probably gone bad. I don't know if your box is located under the cover plate of the shift lever, or, you might have to crawl under the car to get to it. Try to do a search on Google with key words "back up lights switch Chevy Cavilier"

The switch is on the transmission near the shift linkage there are 2 switches I think 1 is for the up shift light and one for the backup lights There is a 3rd connector for the speedometer but it's not by the linkage.

sunseeker is right, there is a switch that when you put it in reverse it triggers the back up lights, having built cavaliers from beginning to end, I believe that switch is under the console right near the shifter, I might be wrong but all you have to do is ask the chevy dealer where the back up light switch is located.

Well I am sorry this happened, but it could be from the wiring stematics of the vehicle. One damp wire could cause your problem.
