It is said that the embryo as it forms mimics and repeats the phylogenetic progression from single-celled organism to the modern form. Long, long ago, when our common ancestor with all other multicellular creatures was a worm-like creature, the breeding population divided into two major groups: the protostomes and the deuterostomes. We are part of the deuterostome bunch. This is Greek for "mouth second" which means our mouth forms later than our anus. As is the case with all worms, our mouth consisted of a single orifice, through which we ingested our worm food. Later on, we kind of got to needing a nose to breathe through that was separate from our mouth, so the original mouth had to be modified to pinch off a separate two holes for our nostrils. The place where that pinching off occurred is the remnant that has become known as the filtrum. There is a genetic defect where this pinching off remains incomplete, and these babies are born with a "cleft palate" which can be either single or in the worst cases, double, and this requires corrective surgery. Another similar place where this phenomenon occurs is in the male and female genetalia, where there is a suture line between the rectum and the vagina in the female and an analagous suture line from the tip of the penis to the rectum in the male. Next time you get a chance, check it out just for scientific purposes only, of course.

Well, I think it's one of those things...when God made each one of us, he took his time. This groove-like thingie is just God's little way of making sure your nose stays in place (pushed gently up toward your nose, making a little curvy beneath it) and your top lip's pointies are formed from the bottom edges of this groove. God just had to finish this little part off to make everything stay in place and look seamless. ;)
God bless!

Gabriel the arch angle said "Do you know how you got that dent, in your top lip? Way back, before you were born, I told you a secret, then I put my finger there and I said "Shhhhh!, you talking monkey."

That's called a groove. The purpose of it is to prevent mucus from getting on the lips.
In physiognamy, women with wide grooves are thought to have many children; women with thin grooves are thought to have medical problems in the ovaries region when they reach their 50s.

It helps hold open the nostrils because the hairs in your nose help filter out dirt and dust going into your lungs.
There is your answer.
