What role have mass extinctions played in the history of life?

Dinosaurs were reptiles.... They died out and mammals and birds increased in their place.

The easy answer is the Mass Extinction after the Astoriod his in the Gulf of Mexico.

BECAUSE if that one event did not happen then the dinos would have had too much power and the small mammals would not have been able to grow at faster levels and then man would not have developed into humans today.

They have cleared the way for other organisms to rise in dominance.

The mass exstinction of the dinosours gave mammels room to grow and develop. At some point, mammels too will die off, and then some other group will be on the rise.

well imagin if there where still dinosoars running around today...

It's sort of a way to make room for a more adapting species.
