I want to start a small business with a company that does the importing, inventory, & shipping. I was told to get a city business license from the city and/or county where I live. I was also told I don't need to do so. THANK YOU FOR THE HELP!!!!!!

The person to call would be your city/county clerks office and ask if a business license is required

You will definately need a sales tax permit which may also trigger the city/county business license requirement. You may also have local zoning issues as mentioned above.

You might also give your local Chamber of Commerce a call and ask for a new business starter packet. Most Chambers have them and they usually contain a listing of the local guidelines and requirements.

I do not see why you would need one since you are not establishing your Residence-your House or Apt-as the business where you would keep inventory and people would come to you to buy---its all a matter of zoning and you can imagine the conflicts esp parking and the hours involved and all kinds of people coming to a residential area.-which is zoned only for people to live there. Some business licenses are given in a residential area because the business doesn't cause conflicts with the people living there. If you want to be absolutely sure contact your County Zoning Dept.
