Good observation. My tastes do differ considerably. While I read a great deal of Christian literature--particularly the Bible and Christian nonfiction--I steer clear of religious broadcasting. My overall philosophy is that 90% of preachers on the tv are crazy. (The same can't be said of the radio, however). While you could equate soap operas with romance novels...and stargate or star trek with science fiction novels...I can't find a literary equivalent that I read to match my "reality tv" (dancing with the stars, american idol) or medical dramas (house, ER) or crime drama (any Law & Orders, CSI's, etc). But I will say this I avoid both westerns on TV and in books :)

I read a lot more than I watch TV or movies, but what I read and watch are very similar-mostly sci-fi and fantasy. I can jump between two or three books the way some people can watch two or three TV shows on different stations at the same time, but that's about it.

I watch a lot of crime shows like CSI (Las Vegas), Without a Trace, and Law and Order: SVU but I've NEVER read a mystery book. I also collect Friends and Desperate Housewives on DVD, so I enjoy comedy/drama. With books, I've recently been reading those recommended online or those on the best-seller lists. My favorite genre though is "chick-lit" so even with my books, I sometimes prefer comedy to the serious stuff. But I feel I am more willing to read books I never thought to read than watch a TV show I don't know anything about. I'm a more voracious reader than TV-watcher...and proud of it!

Reading works on an intellectual level.
Watching is a more emotional level.
I read Dean Koontz and James Patterson.
I watch CNN.
I don't know what shojo manga is.
What's that say about me ?

Actually, I'm drawn to the same kinds of things... books and movies with historical settings.
That doesn't mean I don't like variety, though. I include a healthy amount of comedy and non-fiction/documentaries in my reading and movie selections too.

I read Sci Fi/Fantasy most of the time. I watch Charmed, Buffy, Angel, Dead like me, 7th Heaven and Gilmore girls. My viewing is similar but not identical to what I read.
