I think in most cases people would be happy in making their own choices. That is what life is all about... making choices.

You set up a restaurant, with two halves where people can't see each other. They are randomly sent to either side. One side has only one item to be served - the other side has a menu of three items to choose from. People on both sides have to fill out a survey to say how satisfied they were with their meal.

Or something like that.

What you need to do is set up a control group, to see how happy people are in a normal situation with the menu offered. Then you test your hypothesis - that people are happier with a few choices rather than none at all - but changing something from that control group.

I think that if you have too many choices then you can tend to get stressed out and wonder if you made the right choice if you chose among the millions of choices you have. Just like the psychologists say that when you give children too many cereals to choose from for example they will get very stressed out and unhappy.
