Coups are complete overthrows of government - whether by silent (coup d'etat) like Musharraf or by force (the Ayatollah Khomeini overthrowing the Shah of Iran).

I always thought mutiny was like on a small scale... like a boat or something... while a coup was on a national level...

mutiny ~ when a capitain is overthrown by his subordinates. Coup ~ when another faction ( usually military i think) blocks the assigned political leadership from doing its job, and steps in. similar.
