Montreal Canadiens.
This team has won by far the most Stanley Cups (24). It is eleven more than the team with the next largest number - Toronto Maple Leafs.
It is the second most successful professional sports club in all of North American sports history (after the NY Yankees). This is the oldest NHL franchise and the only one that has won at least one championship per decade since the foundation of the NHL.

Montreal Canadiens. Nobody dominated for 3 consecutive decades like they did. The 50's,60's and 70's. They won 5 Stanley Cups in a row from 56-60. they won 4 in a row form 76-79. The 76-77 team was probably the most dominating in NHL history with a record of 60 wins, 8 losses and 12 ties. I don't think any team in NHL history had 3 defenceman as good as Larry Robinson, Guy Lapointe and Serge Savard at the same time. Montreal during the 3 decades that I mentioned won 15 Stanley Cups. Toronto came the closest with 5. Also Montreal had 2 of the greatest coaches of all time in Toe Blake and Scotty Bowman. They also had 2 of the greatest General Managers of all time in Frank Selke and Sam Pollock. Too many great players to mention.

Though the Montreal Canadiens are one of the greatest sports franchises of all time, and of course hockey's as well, the New York Islanders dynasty is the best NHL team of all time. From 1979 through 1985 the New York Islanders owned much of the league, including 4 straight Stanley Cups (1980-1983) and nearly a 5th (1984). The teams success rested in its ability to maintain its core lineup, one consisting of some of the most well-made draft picks. Passion drove the team, not egos, like that seen in Edmonton's domination in the second half of the 1980s.

It would have to be the Montreal Canadiens teams from the period of the 1950s to 1980. These were the teams that had most of the great names in the teams history, while it did not have legends like Maurice Richard, Howie Morenz or Georges Vézina, it had names like Jean Béliveau,Yvan Cournoyer, Larry Robinson, Steve Shutt, Serge Savard, Guy Lafleur, Henri Richard, and Ken Dryden.

This was the period when the Canadiens were winning most of their Stanley Cups almost every other year or 4 from 1975-1979 and the record 5 straight from 1955-1960 (I guess it might be the 1955-1960 if you were looking for a specific team).

I'm not an Edmonton Fan, but the Oilers from 83-84 through 87-88 would be my choice. Four Cup wins, Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, Kurri, Anderson, Fuhr. They sent an amazing 9 players to the 1986 All Star Game.

Without a doubt the greatest, most fun team ever to watch in terms of offensive production.

I don't follow hockey much, but I think The Montreal Canadiens are the greatest NHL team of all time because they have won the
most Stanley Cups.

If somebody answers anything other than Montreal Canadiens, they're wrong. No one's better than Montreal Canadiens. No one won more Stanley Cups. They've won more cups than all the Canadian teams combined. They're the second winningest team in all of sports only behind the NYY. Also the most beloved team.
GO HABS GO!

I think until recently Detroit was good. i dont know what happen l last season.

Montreal is good but you cant go by just the stanley cups. Plus they havent really been to their best they can be. ( to me they havent )

For the right now Carolina is. Everyone thought they coouldnt win or do anything. People thought they would just blow this past season. Showing them disrespect. They have earned their respect! Dealing with injuries. Bouncing back from terrible losses. Done what most teams wouldnt do.
