Your question reminded me of an old film short in which dinosaurs die in tar pits and their organic matter is eventually converted into hydrocarbons, creating fuel reservoirs, for our cars and engines of the industrial age.

So I guess that is the usage of an old dinosaur.

as one ages begins anew it feeds upon the decay of the previous one. So the dinosaur is the meat which feeds the new predator/carnivour.

It is also a way for us to view and learn form the past - if we only understand it. If we understand how the mighty dinosaur became extinct we can learn and prepare ourselves to avoid extinction.
