A Wendy house, also known as a cubby house or play house is a small toy house usually of a strong fabric, made for children to play in. The name originates from the character Wendy in the play Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie, who kept house for Peter and the Lost Boys.

I think it stems from the victorians time.
Maybe somone rich built a play house for their daughter who happened to be called Wendy and then thought it would be a good idea to produce these wendy houses and sell them.
