I've been burned plenty of times and peeled the skin of as soon as I could and I've never been left with marks, just make sure to use lotion afterwards.

Not in the long run, but if you try to rip sunburned skin off too quickly it will be PAINFUL. This is experience talking: I've had many a sunburn result in peeling.

It's better that you leave it peel by itself just to be sure, then take it off. It could leave some markings. Take this as a good lesson, you could end up with skin cancer.

Some unsolicited advice. Next time you get sunburned, rub vinegar on it about two or three times a day. It will take out the burn and limit the peeling.
