Obviously you will have to switch to fragrance free softener and detergent. Vinegar can be used as a softener. It can also help remove some of the fragrance if you are running the clothes through the rinse cycle again. If your boyfriend is not extremely sensitive, you may be able to get relief by tumbling the clothes in the dryer with a damp towel.

Our washer has two rinse cycles, the fabric softener goes in on the first rinse cycle, the next rinses it out yet leaves the clothes soft. You can also use soft water and you may not need softener. Why does he need his clothes soften, the only time I used it was for my kids diapers.

Oh dear! Sensitivity to petroleum runs in my family, so I can sympathize.

You could try running a rinse cycle with vinegar or baking soda in it. Even a plain rinse should help get the softener out.

Good luck!

I was once told to use about a half a cup of regular vinegar in your wash or rinse cycle. Vinegar will also act as a environmentally friendly fabric softener.

One of my kids has the same thing. You have to use only detergents that are free of fragrance and softner sheets that don't have fragrance either. Also, don't wear perfume and use a soap like dove that has no fragrance.
