The red paint on my 2000 Toyota Tacoma has faded and oxidised.
What is the best way to bring back the original color without harming the clearcoat paint?

use a good auto polish and lots of elbow grease, or an electric drill with a foam pad to work it in (easier). But DON"T use rubbing compound, as you'll end up dulling the clear coat finish. And I wouldn't use bug cleaner either. You can repeat this process. Then follow by a good car wax, like McGuiars Yellow Wax #28. Used on race and show cars. This may take a few days. Be patient. You may not get it back to perfection, but it will look a whole lot better. And worthwhile to do.

There's a contradiction here on several levels. Base coat-clear coat doesn't oxide. Single stage paints do oxidize. A 2000 Toyota has base coat-clear coat. The clear coat may have dulled due to abrasion. If that's the case, it has already been harmed and needs to be polished. Any good car paint supply store can recommend several choices of polishes for clear coats. The clear coat may have separated from the base coat. If so, you have to remove and re-apply the clear coat and possibly the base coat.

A good clearcoat cleaner and a buffer will fix you right up, after you buff it out apply a good wax of your choice.
