Check with the county clerk. They would be able to pull the records on the property.

Cities usually maintain maps of public utility easements at their building / planning / development departments. Private sewer systems however may be kept in different locations. A city-run sewer upkeep department would surely have such records. Otherwise the private company maintaining the sewers could be contacted. Are you billed by a private firm for sewer utilities each month? If so, call the number on your most recent bill.
The County Recorder's Office which is usually a part of the county clerks office) will likely have property title records in BOTH documents and maps which might show information on sewage utility lines.
Your property tax statement should show whether or not there are maintanance bonds for sewers assessed to your land. If so, the bond administrator should be contactable and will have some data on who is being paid by that bond.

You can call the county or township's inspector's department and they can help you. Be nice to them. They are a tremendous source of information and can even give you hints and clues as to what the pros and cons are if you are planning on installing a sewer line and tap. Ask them if there is a main sewer line in the area and where you can find it so you can "tap" into it. There are tap fees involved, so be aware of that part.

Also, they will tell you to review the UBC for your area. The UBC is the Unified Building Code. It is national with your county or township's addendas and amendments. This book is the bible of the requirements. Ask the inspector you are talking to if you can come down to their office and review the UBC. Usually the cost of purchasing the book is slightly pricely. But, you can purchase it for your personal needs. However, and be aware, the codes do change each year if the city or county seat deems it necessary. Particularly if you are in a hurricane zone. The codes changed tremendously after Katrina.

Then you can call up a couple of contractors to determine the cost of installing the sewer line.

Remember, there will be permit fees involved. The cost is a percentage of the overall cost of the project. Typically, the Contractor will pull the permit. However, you can do it yourself once you have an estimate of the job. I, personally, prefer to pull the permit so I know I got the right one. But, then, it is the Contractor's responsibility to pull the proper one. But the Contractor will charge you additional monies to pull it for you as part of his overall cost to install. Usually he will charge a couple of hundreds more for the service of which you can do it at no service charge.

Hope this helps.
