You have two denominators (the bottom number,) 5ths and 10ths. You need to find the lowest common denominator (LCD) for the two. In this case you are lucky, 5 is a factor of 10 (2 X 5 = 10.) Convert the fractions to reflect the LCD; You don't have to do anything to the 9/10 because it is already the LCD. 1/5 becomes 2/10 (multiply the fraction by 2/2.) The next step is to create improper fractions (where the numerator (top part) is larger than the denominator. To do this, multiply the whole number by the LCD and add the fraction; 8 9/10 becomes 89/10, 1 2/10 becomes 12/10. At this point you can simply add the two; 89/10 + 12/10 = 101/10= 10 1/10.
