Romulans are a fictional alien species in the Star Trek universe. They are related to Vulcans. They are characterized as being passionate, cunning, and opportunistic. They are the dominant race of the Romulan Star Empire, one of the larger empires in the Beta Quadrant of the Milky Way galaxy.

They made their first appearance in the 1966 episode "Balance of Terror." The Romulans were created by Paul Schneider, saying "it was a matter of developing a good Romanesque set of admirable antagonists . . . an extension of the Roman civilization to the point of space travel."

If Klingons are the Cold War equivalent of the Russians, then the Romulans could be considered the Cold War equivalent of the Chinese or the North Koreans. As it is strongly hinted at that the Romulans are Romanesque there is something a bit European about them. As they can get angry like the Klingons but not as drastically. The Vulcans would then be considered the equivalent of the US-allied Taiwan or South Korea, also constantly threatened by "reunification"
