The simple answer is that there were eggs long before there were chickens.

If you mean the first chicken egg, well that depends. One assumes that as the chicken evolved from previous forms there was a first animal hatched that would be considered a chicken while its parent's would not. (Yeah, it's kind of like deciding exactly how many hairs a man has to lose to be called "bald," but let's just assume there is such an exact threshold.) The answer then depends on whether you consider a chicken egg to be an egg that produces a chicken, or an egg that's laid by a chicken. If the former, then the chicken egg came first. If the latter, then the chicken came first.

Since the characteristics of an eggshell are, I would think, pretty much determined by the anatomy & body chemistry of the bird (or monotreme - an egg laying mamal like a platypus or spiny anteater) that lays it, the first true & complete chicken egg came after the first chicken.

Since all hens are born from eggs but not all eggs produce hens.
So, two other creatures bred with the outcome of a egg containing a hen.
I thought everyone knew this by now.
