If they are in search of happiness, I believe they want to cancel out any ground level material aspects that could cause them to feel uncomfortable in order to move on for real happiness (like Maslow's hierarchy of needs) . For example, if someone was poor he or she may want to earn more to get what they didn't have before. Clothes that fit well and flatter to fit in rather than get picked on and singled out, a new car rather than an older one that breaks down and will eventually have to be replaced anyway, a newer house with better appliances that work versus their older one which may have been cramped with malfunctioning pipes, roofing etc.
Then once all those needs are met I think they'll try to find happiness within their mind. But all the material things just give them peace of mind and are just a basis for starting off. In other words they don't have to worry about all that so they can focus on other things like obtaining individuality and creativity.
There's a bad side in wanting to earn more and that's greediness and snobbery. Those will only cause mental harm to the individual and the people around them. I believe that a eprson cannot find happiness with these attributes because of all the mental confusion it can cause.
However one can earn more, but real happiness is always separate from that. It's a separate sense of self and relating ot those around you.

Because not having enough money to cover your basic needs and a have a certain comfort level is very very stressful. This is particularly true in family settings and is further exaggerated when family members disagree on the comfort level they wish to achieve. The reason having money once we get it doesn't make us happier is because as soon as we reach a certain level in comfort, we find that suddenly we have more needs and wants than ever before. I'm the type of person who is happy if I can pay my bills and buy food this month, but most people aren't happy if they can't just go out and blow some cash on a whim.

People are so greedy and stuggle to keep up with their friends in luxuries etc. I don't care how much others have
