Because everyone is so cheap. they dont want to spend money for protection. If people would spend some money for a decent antivirus program maybe we wont see people on here crying about AVG.

I've long said you get what you pay for - I value my data and security so I DO NOT use free antivirus software. If you don't value yours, then free products like that are fine.

Personally, I like McAfee... but not a fan of the consumer product - the McAfee Enterprise product though has been great.

But truth be told, even pay ones have issues - Symantec failed to catch a malware infection at one of my clients that other antivirus programs caught using 3 month old definitions, including one vendor who I had never heard of (Dr. Web). You know Symantec - they're that company that makes the little known "Norton AntiVirus" and related product line. So in short, they suck - this wasn't the first time they failed to properly catch a virus on a network of one of my clients. (And no, I didn't recommend them in the first place) Sophos caught the malware - and they are ones who have definitions before most people and discover most new and new varient viruses and malware. Just check out www.secunia.com

Just keep in mind, in MOST cases, a vendor cannot provide protection for the virus if they haven't found it yet and reverse engineered it to know how to protect against it. Which is why the companies that find and report viruses first can often do a better job of protecting (like Sophos). But even they will miss something once in a while.

I believe AVG sucks. I have to have it on my pc at work and it drives me nuts...EVERY day it wants me to perform an upgrade. I look at it like this, antivirus software can be expensive but it's worth it to save your computer. If you get a virus that won't go away, it can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars to try and fix your pc or get a whole new one. Spend the $100.00 to get McAfee or Norton. We all have habits that cost more than that. Our habits should get put off hold for the sake of our computers!!! people need to stop taking the cheap and easy way out....

Good Luck!!

They only allow you download the basic version. To have its full potential you will have to purchase. The basic version is good to catch most of the viruses but it will stop updates after 30 days or so. I purchased McAfee VirusScan and it has worked great for me.
