The directions that came with the router are saying that I need to hard wire the router and modem to a computer...then I will be able to get my access all over. But I only have a laptop...everytime I needed to get on the net I just hooked up where the modem is. I bought this router so I could be all over the house. Any suggestions?

You don't need to have a pc wired to the router to use it. You may have to set it up that way, but once you configure the wireless settings you should be able to use just wireless.

You need to be a little more specific.
Does your laptop have a wireless card and the correct drivers installed?
Does windows recognize the network?

Assuming you have a Linksys or Netgear router, you will want to connect your laptop to your new router using an ethernet patch cable (the router must be configured before you can use the wireless functions). Plug the cable into your laptop and the other end into one of the numbered (not "WAN") ports of the router.

Next, insert the CD that came with your router into the laptop and follow the instructions. Most of the configuration should automatically take place. When asked, you will want to use a second network cable to connect from the LAN port on the cable or DSL modem to the WAN port on the router. In nearly all cases, the router will then obtain its settings automatically from the cable/DSL modem, now all there's left to do is set up a "key" code for your wireless connection so others don't use it remotely, and follow any other instructions.

So, to recap, you're going to want 2 network cables... one will go from laptop to a numbered port on router, the other will go from the WAN port on the router to the network port on the modem.

If you are using DSL service, there is a very strong possibility your DSL modem is also a router. If this is the case, return the router and buy a Wireless Access Point, then follow the instructions to set that up. Otherwise, I hope this helps.

It is asking you for a pc to set it up initially. You can use your lap top to do this via an ethernet cord. Once you have set up the router you can disconnect the cable. Though any time you want to configure the router you will need to connect it to the router with the cable again.

You cannot use a modem to connect to a wireless router. You will need a wireless card for your laptop to receive wireless signals.

by modemI assume you mean something like a cable or DSL modem.

You will need to connect your laptop to the wireless router using an ethernet cable to do the initial configuration of the router. After that configure your wireless adapter on the laptop to match the settings of your wireless access point and you should be good to go.

From the modem you have to have an ethernet cable connected on one of the LAN ports of the router, set up your router first access the Interface of the router depending of the one you bougth if it is Linksys the user interface is 192.168.1.1 if you have Netgear router-192.168.0.1 usually this information is found at the buttom part of the modem it will ask you for the routers user name nad password. check your manual for this.

Then if you have Basic DSL service that means to say you dont have static IP addresses then select PPPOE then type your ISP provided email address and password, select apply then ok

now you are ready to connect wirelessly,
click start- control pannel -then network connections right click on wireless network connections then - view available wireless network - look for linksys if you have linksys router .. then double click on it .. then your good and connected ..

Your ISP would be able to give you detailed step by step instructions on this but they dont support this issue.

Always the Best :)

As long as your router has wireless capabilities, you will be able to get internet anywhere in range. Simply connect the router to the modem and viola! You have to then connect to the wireless network to use it

~ Use your laptop to setup your wi-fi router ...

~ Then after you made some necessary configuration ...

Leave your wireless router in any area of the house ... of course close to where you hooked up your Phone lines or Cable ...
