If you had auto update set to on (good idea), then it probably downloaded a security patch and rebooted itself. Not a great solution but better than leaving you unprotected. If you do not have auto-update setup, the run a virus checker and check for spyware. I would recommend using Windows Defender, free from www.Microsoft.com

It shuts down to install updates from Microsoft and may do the same for anti virus updates. It usually gives you a 2 minute warning if it's a Microsoft reboot and you can cancel. It usually comes at an awkward time. They update mine at 11:30 at night. I wait for the bloody thing to say two minutes to shut down, cancel and make a dash for the bathroom and hope it hasn't rebooted and messed up my download while I'm away. Some programs - remind you it needs rebooting next day. Some just wait for you to turn the thing off and when you turn it back on it reboots. If you ever uninstall anything that is hardware and plug and play - for example a USB port won't work - you uninstall it. Then reboot and XP scans for new hardware on boot up - so re-installs the USB port and then it works.

You might have pressed the cancel button? Either that or when the window comes up telling you that it is closing down a program maybe you clicked the cross in the corner? It might have needed to shut down for many reasons, installing new software maybe?

Either you downloaded an update that required a restart, you have a virus that shut your computer down, or if it is a laptop, your battery was completely drained so it shut down.

Because you were actually using it at the time?
Windows is clever enough to work out that you're using the computer and reschedules the shutdown at a later time.

Did you install/upgrade any new Hardware of Programs? Some programs require a restart anfter installation or upgrade. If you have windows update running, it may update itself, from time to time, and sometimes that requires a restart too.

It was probably running out of resources, you have a memory leak or something else going on.
You manually shut it down for your and its own good.

it was too tired to carry on. Computers can be as frustrating as a husband who lasts a minute when there is all night to go.
