I asked this same thing! See the answers I got here on yahoo answers to the EMO meaning! They gave me a great site to go to; to listen to the music too.

It sort of Gothic except emo like to hurt themselves. So I'm pretty sure it would fall in the catergory Social group. It also can be Music because of Gothic songs. But remember there is a differen ce between emos and goths.

It does mean "emotional" persay, but it's become attached to the skater image, and a certain (coughstupidcough) haircut. It is also attached to the "metrosexual" fad, and a lot of "emo" guys wear really tight pants, sometimes even their gfs' pants.

It's a type of music. Emotional Rock, usually.

emo = emotional.
i don't like labels, but i'll explain it to you.
emo's are considered very emotional... cut their wrists, listen to depressing music, and might be suicidal.
