Children grow up to do what you do, not just what you tell them to do. They push to find the line where they will get punished to find out what are the rules of life, until they reach true maturity, they will always test the "rules".

You should try to explain...give a reason which is true to your knowledge. If you are a trustworthy decent adult and the activity is harmful you will probably have brought up your child to respect what you say and not to take your advice lightly.
If your child knows that you are inconsistent and not to be trusted s/he will be more likely to do the opposite of what you want.

You've got a point but you can't take that chance with kids because some are not only kids but are thick as well. So if you say "put your hand on that hot iron", the take up rate could be quite high.

Depends on whether they can see through you or not, some kids are really good at spotting when they are being manipulated, even at the age of 4.

depends what it is. If you tell them to go to bed they wont, but if you tell them not to go to bed they'll just smile and stay up, so i'm confused about the question but yes or is it no?

Depends on how bad they behave. If they're really good kids then they'll try really hard not to do it. But when you say no, it's a temptation to them.

It depends on the child, but if you tell them "no" and don't punish them when they do, why would they not do it again?
