Chickens, as well as many other birds, like parrots, lay eggs without being fertilized. They are just there! Like in humans, but we don't lay ours. :P So, when they lay them, they are not going to be anything but eggs.

I'm trying to answer what no one else has to this point... a chicken will hatch a CLUTCH of eggs... the chicks are called a BROOD. When a hen is incubating her eggs, she will stop laying temporarily. There are other reasons a hen will stop laying, too. If she does not get regular feed or a good feed schedule, if it is too hot or not enough daylight or if she gets pestered she may stop laying eggs. This won't hurt her, it's just mother nature. Hope this helps answer your questions. If you have more, feel free to email me from my website below.

Chickens are like many other types of birds: They can lay eggs without "having sex." However, if they have not mated, the eggs remain unfertilised. Eggs in the store that you purchase for consumption are generally unfertilised, unless stated otherwise. Eggs are continuously laid.

Chickens do not have " litters ."

all female animals produce eggs including humans. No females need to mate to produce eggs. Chickens will lay eggs even if there is no cockerel about.I breed and show purebred poultry. In order for the eggs to be fertile and produce chicks they need to mate with a cockerel but they lay eggs regardless.
