I assume you mean a test result indicates a life threatening problem....in which case, yes the doctor is obligated to inform you. It is more likely he will call and ask you to come see him as soon as possible, that sort of information is not generally given over the phone.

As soon as he got the results, or maybe the next day if he was busy.

Besides the fact that its the moral thing to do . . . there is the potential liability issues if they know, but do not tell you.

if you have some tests taken and something shows up your dr. should phone you as soon as possiable! but you should tell him to do so !
