Whenever we leave, be it 5 months or 50 years, Iran will take them over, and the Shiite's will kill all the Sunnis' and the Kurds will run for the Turkish border.
There is a solution to the continuing wars in the middle east, but it involves relocating the Jews again. This time to the western hemisphere.
Much of Texas is undeveloped desert. Cut Texas from 40 miles north of Houston straight across to New Mexico. Money changes hands, all landowners are compensated and anyone who doesn't want to live in "New Israel" also will be compensated for their moving expense. Same for businesses, relocation and moving expenses paid for by Israel.
This ends the middle east crisis and solves the illegal immigration problem as Israel would do a much better job at maintaining the largest stretch of our Mexican border than the feds do, leaving them to concentrate along the rest of the border.
I know this sounds crazy, but so did sending them to the Palestinian desert 60 or so years ago. This could be done and would show the world that we have the ability to open our minds and use them.

it's a disaster and not even close to being a solution. and that is why it will not be done. first of all even if divided the tensions and killings come from syrian and iranian miltia commandos who know what they're doing and are doing anything possible to show that americans have failed and they just made iraq more divided and never ended the bloodshed in it.. so even if u divide the country the situation will remain the same .. the only solution is to eliminate the terrorist groups operating to start a violent civil war in iraq.. wich is unfortunatly impossible cz these groups are monitored closely by iran and syria and it's all being used as a political card against the USA and its stupid middle eastern policy .. peace :)

Probably among the worst of possible outcomes as you would have:
1 - A new entity called Kurdistan which would be quickly invaded by Turkey and Iran to forestall the inevitable attempt to unite the Kurds in all three countries.
2 - A Sunni region with no meaningful natural resources - which are currently the lifeblood of the country.
3 - A Shiite south with an extremely close relationship with Iran - nothing anyone in the Middle East (except Iran and Hezbollah) or in the West wish to see happen.
I believe that a partition would make today's problems look pretty good in comparison.

Sometimes that seems like the solution but I don't think it would be that simple. First of all you'd have Baghdad which everyone would want to control or at least have a piece of so how would that be split?? I think there's already a "Kurdistan" in the north but how it will play out with Sunni's & Shiites is anyone's guess. In the end it's their country and they will have to decide. I'm not sure they want "our" type of democracy and if that's the end result then we have to honor what they ultimately decide. Bush's policy of forcing American democracy may not be what the Iraqi people want.

They should stay one country. I don't believe there is any solid evidence of civil war in Iraq. The violence and bombings in Iraq would subside if the Iranian and Syrian regimes were removed. They seem to be the ones funding(and that's what it takes is cash) not only Hezzbolah but the terrorist acts in Iraq also. Democracy taking hold in Iraq is a tremendous threat to the nutcase President of Iran. The Iranian people would love to experience freedom and democracy in their country.

I think it was the idea from very beginning during this war.British map makers and politicians did a great injustice to Kurdish people when they carved up Iraq Jordan Kuwait and Saudi Arabia from ottoman empire.at that time they wanted the Arabs to control the area in order to keep Russians away from warm waters of Indian Ocean.Speaking with a humanitarian note I think Kurdistan should be carved up from Iraq Turkey and Iran and it should border Black Sea.I am not kurdish but i feel pity for those opressed people.

It is an idea worth serious consideration.
However, need to work out details:
- ownership of oil fields, sharing of revenues, and pipeline controls & usage rights
- ground and air transportation rights through each of the 3 new countries
- how to mollify Turkey so that Turkish Kurds don't demand independence
- who owns the seaport at Umm Qasr in the Gulf?
- water rights along the Tirgris and Euphrates rivers and reservoirs
- What about Shi'as who live in Sunni regions? And vice-versa? Are they forced to move?
Just discussing the idea may force people to consider an out-of-the-box solution.

while the kurds in the north and the shia in the south would be fairly happy, the sunni in the middle (left with baghdad, the desert and no oil) would not accept this.
the question is relevant to so many places in africa and the middle east with borders drawn up by colonial powers using a ruler with no regard for ethnicity. i think larger federations along the lines of the EU are probably the best long term solution.

Probably not.
That would only change the potential situation from a "civil war" to a "border war" between the three factions.
Only when they become sick and tired - and aware of the waste and futility - of the killing and maiming of their neighbors will they become stable enough to find a way to live peacefully among themselves - despite their differences.

The north is doing real great, the south is doing not as great but better, that just leaves the center. That has always been Saddam country. That is where most of his power was.The trouble now is that his followers do not like the idea that he is no longer in power & the Kurds in the north, & the sheites in the south now have more power.
