So, I've got an Archos GS100 Mini (in black, if you're interested), but whenever I plug it into my PC (WMP), it says ' This device can perform faster if plugged into a USB 2.0 port' and all that gunk associated with Windows. Now, it says 'faster', but my device isn't even recognised by the computer! Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

Here are my suggestions:
1) Reboot your PC and don't start any apps when it comes up
2) Visit the manufacturers web site and see if there is any special or updated driver for the device. If there is download the latest version.
3) Open the Device Manager and see if you have a driver for the Archos video player. If so, remove it and (if #2 above is true) install the new driver. If not, remove any driver that IS there for the Archos player and reboot to let the PC rescan the device via Plug-N-Play.
4) If you are plugging into a hub, remove everything else and plug the player directly into a USB port on your computer.
5) If you still get that message (after you get the device recognition issue fixed), consider purchasing and installing a USB 2.0 card if you have an available PCI slot in your machine.

I have had similar problems in the past and installing the USB 2.0 card made things much better. I use it to connect two external hard drives which should operate at the max possible speed.

Good luck!

You don't say what your OS is..... Since your usb recognizes theres 'something plugged in' - it gives you the message saying that the device will take 2.0 usb and to gain speed - you should update. However, since your computer doesn't recognize the device itself, your device may need a driver, especially if you're using Windows 98. Go out to the site and see if there is one for it.

As far as usb 1.1 - yes, it's old technology.... it's really cheap to buy yourself a 2.0 pci card and just stick it in an empty slot. If you have XP, you won't have to do anything. If you have 98, you most likely will need a driver (or it will come with a CD).
