it varies. What they are actually doing is entering into a binding arbitration agreement.

Typically they get there case decided. The winner gets damages. Plus, they each get paid to be on the show. And the decision is legally binding.

So basically everybody wins.

I think it's on a sliding fee based ammount of the suit and the length of time the segment may take to run on the judge shows

a friend of mine went on the People's Court a few years back when Ed Koch was the judge and was paid 300 dollars for appearing on tv and allowing the judge there to settle the dispute (he lost fyi and had to pay 355 dollars plus filing fees of 200 bucks on his case where he was suing for a supposed illegal eviction from his apartment over silly things)
