First, you need to ensure that the driver for the firewire card is installed. Either use the disk that it came with (and any instructions) to install from the disk, or visit the manufacturers web site and find the driver for the model of card that you installed.

If you have already installed the right driver and still having an issue, open the Device Manager and look for something referencing "1394 port" or similar, with 1394 as the key. That is the IEEE spec for what is commonly referred to as FireWire. (For more info follow the link in Sources below.)

Without more detailed information about your operating system, the card and the camera it's difficult to provide much more direction.

To summarize the key things are:
1) install the card physically
2) install the correct driver using the correct procedure
3) verify the settings in the device manager, see if it says "this device is functioning properly", and does not list a device / IRQ conflict
4) plug in the camera, load your software you are using to record video, start the video playing and start the software recording. Run it for 30 seconds or so as a test. Verify that it will play.

If those steps do not resolve the issue seek assistance from a knowledgable friend or contact the FireWire card manufacturer for troubleshooting assistance.

Good luck!

Click on Start (bottom left of the desktop)

Select Control Panel

Switch to Classic View (top left of screen that opens up)

Double-click on System

Select the Hardware Tab

Click on Device Manager

Look for an entry that says IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers (That's the fireware card that you've inserted)

You may find an entry in Network adapters called 1394 Net Adapter (Again, this is your fireware card).

As for why you can't see anything on screen, I'm afraid I can't help as I've never used my fireware card. I only installed it for my son to use with his camcorder.

I didn't need to install any drivers when I installed mine, as Windows XP picked it up automatically.

First, usually a new card will require drivers inorder to function proprly. In the event it dodnt then go to My Computer, then click on view system information (top left of navigation bar), then click on hardware. From there go to device manager, and see if you can enable the device from there.

If everything was installed correctly, xp should either have given you a two tone signal or launched the hardware install wizard.

You didn't toss the Camcorder-to-computer install CD, did you?
