Irving was one of the fastest growing cities in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s.
The Irving School District, under W.T. Hanes, built a new Irving High School, converted the
older building on Sixth to become Bowie Junior High School, and added these campuses
between 1956 and 1969: two high schools named for General Douglas MacArthur and Admiral
Chester Nimitz; two junior high schools named for Texas heroes David Crockett and William B.
Travis; and nine elementary schools named for local citizens Albert Farine, L.B. Barton, T.J.
Lee, John R. Good, Thomas Haley, A.S. Johnson, John J. Brandenburg, Salley B. Elliot, and
Hanes himself, who did much to consolidate the district and improve its academic reputation.
