I live in an area with lots of minerals in the water and we get lime buildup in our dishwasher which is lined in stainless steel. If the buildup is bad, we use LimeAway. We take all moviing parts out of the dishwasher and soak them in Limeaway to dissolve the buildup. While the parts are soaking we spray the inside with LimeAway and let it sit for about 1/2 hour to an hour. We clean the parts all up and put them back into the machine without first washing it off. Be sure to wear rubber gloves because LimeAway is harsh. Then we pour about 1/2 gallon of white vinegar into the bottom of the dishwasher and run it on the Pots and Pans cycle which is the longest cycle. When it is done our dishwasher sparkles like new.

To maintain the dishwasher in between deep cleaning, we use 1/2 gallon of white vinegar every two months or so.

But the best thing we've found to prevent the buildup is the new Cascade product on the market. Its a little packet with powder on one side and blue liquid on the other. What a pleasant surprise to find that even after using if for two months, we have barely any buildup in our dishwasher and it still looks shiny.

Hot water will clean the dishes like they were intended. You should have a water temperature in the dishwasher of at least 120 degrees F. for the dishwasher to work properly. If the temperature falls below you are not dissolving the soap and melting the grease. If you have hard water the minerals in the water are not mixing with the soapy water properly and they can leave a film behind and it eventually coats and clogs the workings.

The first thing many people will tell you if the dishes are not cleaning well is that you need a good rinse agent. But the rinse agent is only to break the surface tension of the water down so you do not get SPOTS not filming or little food particles left on the dishes.

Eliminate odors by sprinkling 1/2 cup baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher between loads or pour a half box of it and run the empty machine thru it's rinse cycle....or if the interior is looking rusty brown, due to iron content in your water, dump contents of unsweetened kool-aid into the soap drawer and run the washer thru the hot water cycle-when done the inside will be as white a s the day you bought the machine...or to remove built-up soap scum, pour 1 cup undiluted white vinigar into the bottom of the unit or in a bowl on the top rack. Then run the machine thru full cycle without any dishes or detergent. Do this once a month, especially if you have hard water.

This suggestion noted that if vinigar is not mentioned in the owner's manual, check with manufacturer first. bummer. marlyne B

Pour a cup of vinegar in dishwasher and run a cycle. You can also spray sides with it for an extra boost. Got glasses that are cloudy? Throw those in and cycle with vinegar.
