Basically it indicates how outgoing a person is. If a person is willing to make friends he/she will go around interacting with other peers.

What do you say the answer is ?
( I have known an American who was always talking about his 'Buddies,' only, they were not 'Buddies,' they were not even 'buddies,' they were 'acquaintances' who he knew to say 'Hi' to - 'in passing.')
There are 'Friends,' and there are friends, and others you know but wouldn't actually use the term 'friend' to, in relation to the level of relationship.
It could mean that the person who has a considerable number of friends is either....
popular, or
wealthy, or
a liar.......
or maybe a terrific person who can actually sustain a 'number' of close personal relationships with people s/he likes to call 'Friends.'
So, Ok, wass the answer then?

it's not quantity, but quality. always remember that. a person may have 1-2 really good friends. that doesn't mean anything is wrong with them. i feel it represents a very well balanced person. on the other hand, sometimes a person who has or needs a lot of friends may have complex issues. maybe they always need reassuring, or to be the center of attention. either way, it depends on the person. it could actually be the other way around, just depends.

Many things ....they could be a really lovely person full of joy,friendly, helpful, considerate ,etc,etc a pleasure to know ....or a very experienced con artist, deceitful, manipulative, playing mind games....little depth of character,and yet able to fool most, (never all)this type usually calls people friends when really they are acquaintances
Popularity breeds contempt....still true .
