The only U.S. Presidents to be impeached were Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton - neither was removed from office. Congress was moving to impeach Richard Nixon when he resigned.

Only 2 presidents have been impeached: Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Both were acquitted because of the lacking 2/3 vote for conviction. Richard Nixon resigned before he could be impeached.

Clinton was the most recent president impeached. Johnson was the other president impeached. Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment.

Many people apparently confuse impeachment with conviction. Impeachment refers to the indictment by the House and the trial by the Senate. Just like it counts as a trial regardless of whether the defendant is convicted or not, it counts as impeachment regardless of whether they are convicted and removed from office, or not.

Andrew Johnson (1868) and Bill Clinton (1998) were both impeached, but acquitted.

Bill Clinton was impeached, but he was not removed from office. The house voted in a majority to try him, but the senate did not vote in a 2/3 majority to convict him of anywrong doing. Andrew Johnson, from the reconstruction days, was impeached by the house, but the senate came 1 vote shy of removing him from office. So far, there has never been a president that was impeached and convicted.

Bill Clinton. He was impeached by the House of Representatives, but the Senate held a trial and did not find him guilty, so he was not removed from office.

Bill Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives in December, 1998. The charges were perjury and obstruction of justice, arising from the Lewinsky scandal.

Instead of resigning at this point, he appealed their decision and decided to plea his case; therefore, he took it to trial which is conducted by the Senate.

At the conclusion of this trial, the Senate fail short of the two-thirds necessary to convict; therefore, Clinton was acquitted in February 1999.

Andrew Johnson not only faced charges of impeachment like Clinton did, but he was actually impeached, unlike Clinton.
