Sounds like you might have a bad wheel hub and bearing. Worn struts will make a thumping sound when going over bumps.If you can jack the affected wheel off the ground, grab the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock position and try to move the wheel . If you have any "slack" the wheel hub and bearing are the cause.

Motorist Assurance Program suggests Shock/Strut replacement at 50,000 miles. But I'm not sure that's your problem. Sounds more like a control arm or something. Check for play in front end....or have a decent mechanic shake it down.
